SAWS was in Stage 3 when we checked in October 2026. Stages change with aquifer levels, so check SAWS for the current rules.

In San Antonio, your sprinkler schedule is tied to the level of the Edwards Aquifer. When the aquifer drops, SAWS moves to a stricter drought stage, and your allowed watering time shrinks. A system that wastes water or runs on the wrong day costs more here, especially in Stage 3.

San Antonio Watering Rules

SAWS sets watering rules by drought stage, based on the 10-day average level of the Edwards Aquifer at its monitored well (SAWS):

  • Year-round rules (above 660 ft): irrigation any day, midnight to 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. to midnight
  • Stage 1 (660 ft): once a week on your designated day
  • Stage 2 (650 ft) and Stage 3 (640 ft): once a week, 5–10 a.m. and 9 p.m.–midnight on your designated day
  • Stage 4: once every other week

Your watering day depends on the last digit of your address: 0 or 1 on Monday, 2 or 3 on Tuesday, 4 or 5 on Wednesday, 6 or 7 on Thursday, and 8 or 9 on Friday. Areas without an address water on Wednesday. Hand-held hoses are allowed any time (SAWS Stage 3 rules).

SAWS customers went back to Stage 3 rules in September 2026. In Stage 3, residential customers who use 20,000 gallons or more in a month also pay a surcharge (SAWS). A hidden leak or a stuck valve can push a household over that line. See high water bill from sprinklers.

Soil and Climate

Austin and San Antonio both sit along the edge of the Edwards Plateau. To the west, soils are often shallow and lie over limestone (Texas Parks & Wildlife). To the east, the Blackland Prairie has deep clay that swells when wet and cracks when dry (USDA-NRCS Houston Black soil description).

Each soil causes its own sprinkler problems. Thin, rocky ground holds little water, so lawns stress quickly when coverage is uneven, and pipe laid shallow over rock is easier to damage. Clay is slow to soak water in, so long cycles run off, and its seasonal movement can stress buried fittings. To see what’s under your own yard, look up your address in the USDA Web Soil Survey.

Central San Antonio is in USDA hardiness zone 9a, where the coldest night of a typical year reaches 20–25°F (USDA map). It was also hit by the February 2021 Great Texas Freeze (NOAA NCEI).

Free Check-Ups From SAWS

SAWS offers residential customers a free WaterSaver irrigation check-up and reminds them to check the controller’s clock and day each season, so the system doesn’t water on the wrong day (SAWS).

Hiring Someone in Texas

Texas licenses landscape irrigators at the state level. Under Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1903, anyone who installs, repairs or services an irrigation system for pay generally needs a state irrigator license, or must work under a licensed irrigator. A homeowner working on their own property is exempt. Ask any contractor for their license number and check it with the state (license information).

Texas rules also require backflow protection on irrigation systems connected to drinking water (30 TAC 344.50). If your backflow device is leaking or was damaged, have a licensed professional repair it rather than taking it apart yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my watering day in San Antonio?

It depends on the last digit of your address: 0 or 1 Monday, 2 or 3 Tuesday, 4 or 5 Wednesday, 6 or 7 Thursday, 8 or 9 Friday. During drought stages, you can water only on that day.

What hours can I water in Stage 3?

From 5 to 10 a.m. and from 9 p.m. to midnight on your designated day. Hand-held hoses are allowed any time.

Why does the Edwards Aquifer matter for my sprinklers?

SAWS drought stages are triggered by the aquifer’s 10-day average level. As it falls, watering rules get stricter.
